Benoy and Sudi

May 26,

On saturday night we went to the Bangalore Alumni meet. There were some well known guys out there including Pepsi's Rajiv Bakshi. But the guy who caught my attention was Benoy, an IIT/IIM guy who was once my classmate. He's done rather well for himself. He's got one of the best jobs on offer. But the reason i mention him is because at a point of time I kinda disliked him. Its not that he did anything wrong or said anything wrong. Its just that somewhere we didn't get along quite well.

Over the years we hardly met but i thought of him often. Partly because he was doing rather very well and partly because i never disliked anyone so much and all that without a reason. Often you meet people and you say that this guy is not quite likable. But after a few meetings you suddenly realise that he was perhaps quite a decent chap. With Benoy it took me quite some time to come to that conclusion.

I dont know if he remembers my name but at party he spent some good time talking to me. After he left some of his batchmates told me some very flattering things about him. Not about the things he has done but the kind of person he's become. Jus hope someday people think about me in the same way.

Then at an IIM meet you would normally expect super duper guys with lots of airs about themselves. But the reality is quite so different. The two years has had an impact on most of them. As someone said it was like a rude awakening to reality. A reality that is so very different from what we would normally associate with such an environment. But the end result is that they are proud of the experience and most would agree that it had forced them to redefine their value systems and in the process have become better human beings.

I guess you all have had enough of IIMs from me so let digress to talk about the more mundane things in life. Sudipto is one of the interesting chaps in this list. Not many of you would know him but Anit does ;) Actually after her now famous mail sudipto made it a point to make a personal reply to her. The consequence was rather hilarious and this time the message was so clear that we didn't need a punjabi interpreter. Well coming to back to sudipto he's has perhaps the most unusual resume in this list. He is an engineer who sells shrimps, prawns and lobsters and along with it does insurance policies. ;) Now this fellow is a huge hairy monster who's quite gentle with the people around him. But once in a while when he throws his threatening glances around and you are left with no option but to obey.

I write about him because when I was without job I didn't have the courage to do what he does today. For an engineer to do what he is doing today is perhaps a big let down for some. But for me its like creating opportunities where none existed. I admire him for what he is doing now. Sudi is perhaps taking a big risk in the conventional sense. But who knows what this could lead to.
