Oracle installation wisdom
Hi Guys,
Jan 18,
I have been having a very busy time. I left for office yesterday at around 9 in the night and today i returned at one in the afternoon. Before you get ideas let me tell you a bit about my so very hectic schedule. I wanted to do some work regarding BLOBs and CMP beans. There are few complexities involved but I will spare you the details
The interesting part of the work was neither the CMPs or the Blobbys but the effort i put into the preparation of the ground for the real work. To do the work i intended to do you need a database. And normally such things are taken for granted. You have it in almost all the machines. But as luck would have it I had messed up mine thanks to no mean efforts to my mentor. I guess i messed up my registries so badly that my original oracle cds refused to install properly.
So yo I went to work and I must have changed, modified or deleted at least 250 registry entries. To make matters interesting i had applications running on my machine that depended on some oracle entries. So I had to be careful not to mess up with them or I would have more trouble. So painstakingly i continued with the process and after a few hours i realised that there were some entries that refused to budge. No matter what i did they just could not be deleted.
The number of times i restarted my machine must have reached the double digit figures. Despite all this my persistant double clicks on the oracle setup produced nothing but an hour glass which lasted for not more than a few seconds. Tried i looked to google for help. And even that tested my patience. I must have gone through at least 60 pages concerning Oracle iniatialisation errors. Finally i came to newgroup pages that exactly described my condition. Unfortunately thats all those newgroups mentioned: ie my problem.
So after going through all those pages containing P4 patches to god knows what else i came across a work around at around 5 in the morning. It involved copying the contents of the first cd to the hard disk and then making some changes in certain files.
Sensing victory i took what i believed to be a well deserved break. Fate probably did not like my doing so and the real saga began. After about half hour of installation work when i was to put in the second cd the installer again played truant. It refused to accept the second cd. I repeat the whole thing i dont know how many times. Guys started going home and slowly the office became almost empty. There was another guy who was ill and he stayed back just because of me. And I continued with my work. And it did not work.
Finally my friend (another Rahul) took pity and sat with me. We got such a good pratice of the oracle installation that i can now take classes for it. After a few hours of effort he made a startling observation. On the basis of his observation Rahul taught me an important lesson. "Never ever try an oracle installation with the wrong cds". A big part of fourteen hours for such a priceless piece of information.
HR guys and honest promises don't go hand in hand. I can prove it but wont take the risk of doing so due to reasons which are not so obvious.
Then one of the recipients of this mail has got a call from XL. He is confident of getting into better places and so am I. He once surreptitiously asked if I could include his name in my mails. So Aalap here I grant your wish. :) There is another one who wanted me to do something similar but more of him later.
