Nat Geo Special

Hi Guys,
Jan 31,

If you fall on the ground and soil yourself what will you do? Chances are that you will look for water. Now imagine surrounded by water all around and you get dirty.

Some deep sea creature do something really interesting in such cases. In fact the green turtles use the rocks on the sea bed to take a bath and remove the dirt and barnacles from their shell. And some like the Peacock flounders take a dip in the sea bed sand. Ergots and the buffalos are the not the only ones to have a symbiotic clean up relationship. Under sea there guys like the Hump heads and the Cleaner Ras taking the famous ergot buffalo role.

So many times have i heard of the story of the small fishes coming together to take on the larger ones. Actually its all based on facts. You have certain characters which in groups can be a danger even to the big ones like the shark. Some like the barracudas move in groups of thousands and hunt.

There are other interesting characters like the sweet lips and the crocodile fish. Further you have the sea urchins and the cushion stars And of the course the tentacled octupus. The character, like the chameleon shrinks and expands the elastic pigments on its skin to change colours. The camouflage helps it to trap the unfortunate ones for lunch.

You have the pipe fishes which look like the hydroids. And the sea grass that looks like fishes. To take matters further you have fishes that look like dry leaves.

But the most interesting character was the green turtles. The females copulate just once in about three years. But the action on the d-day kind of makes up for the gap. The ratio is skewed heavily against the males and the poor chap who turns lucky is so badly assaulted by his peers that he is rendered useless for a long time. Talk of competition in the humans.

The females after the act lay hundreds of eggs often from different sources. The nesting is done on some islands. If the nest is warm then you have a huge number of females off springs and a colder nest favours the males. May i say its a case of hot chicks and cool dudes. After the hatching the baby turtles have to head all the way back to the sea. Some dont and are breakfast for the Monitor lizards and the sea birds. The monitor lizards are the closest relatives of dinosaurs present today. They often reach the size of a couple of meters.
