Saathiya
Hi Guys,
27 Dec,
The response to my last mail was pretty cool. After a very long time my inbox was full and there was no forwards:-)
The last some time has been pretty lifeless but the x'mas season got better of me and I made up for the dry period. First my brother was here in delhi for a break and for first time in my life I spent money on my family. I bought a cotton sari for my mother, a shirt for my father and a walkman for junior.
Let me say that those who suggest that there is happiness in giving are at times not very far from truth. A few days from now probably all the gifts will be forgotten. But for me it was memorable as that was the day when I hugged my parents for the first time in my life.
Then I saw two movie that I liked. On the X'mas day I saw Saathiya with 9 other guys from office and the next day saw the bond movie with my brother and two other friends. Both the instances i felt like being in the minority. For i was amongst the few who really liked them both.
Saathiya is an interesting tale that spans a single day with a lot of reflections peppered in. The central theme is the love hate relationship of the lead characters. The language of the movie is different from the usual bollywood stuff. The songs are nice and the background is real. It talks of love and goes beyond its usual connotations. It talks about the frustration of the characters without the use of melodrama. And there is wit and humor that comes out of incidents that are so mundane.
The discord between the characters is not based on some huge difference of opinion or ego. The root is the small incidents that you forget after it happens. You don't fight but there is an unease based on things not rational. Fundamentally there is nothing wrong in the relation yet nothing is right. The characters care for each other and yet they are not comfortable in each other's company. All in all an interesting movie which should not be seen in large groups.
Then the bond was the way I like it. I am a die-hard fan of the Ian Fleming creation. The special effects and fight sequences are good. The others with me felt that it was a bit too incredible to be true. But then I am a believer when it comes spies and adventure.
There are the girls and the action sequences but what appeals me the most is his character. He "never say die" spirit makes him move on despite being betrayed and put in the enemy prison for fourteen months. After being freed he is disowned by his own kind and branded useless. He stands for his men with all he can and his loyalty is not loud.
Bond for me is a super normal man, in other words he is very different from you and me. He is so incredible that you don't for a moment feel that he is possible. An exaggeration that is the result of someone's creative imaginations. My feelings are quite contrary to such a line of thought. In fact I feel that if such a man existed he would be capable of all that is attributed to him and much more.
Some of people involved in the creation of the character are as incredible as the creation itself. Ian Fleming worked for the British secret service and was actually involved in the kidnap and arrest of the second most powerful individual in the german army during the peak of the world war. The character who is rumored to be the inspiration for the bond character actually planned to topple the communist Soviets single handed. It's a different matter that he failed but what is interesting is that there were and perhaps there are individuals who can think and do things that is far beyond what is impossible for most of us.
I read somewhere that some of the gadgets with the bond are the result of the imagination of scientists from some of the best organizations around the world. In fact I read some where that the soviets in their heydays actually had a division that replicated things mentioned in the bond movies.
As a rule most of things that a part of the bond movies are possible. Take for instance the bond car which can become invisible. There were reports that the US navy was able to make the people invisible as early as 1944. Even the logic of an invisible car as explained in the movie seems plausible.
Then another interesting thing is that Mr bond goes to Cuba and pretends to be an ornithologist. And the real Mr Bond was an ornithologist based in Cuba. In fact I believe that the book in Mr Brosnan's hand was actually authored by Mr James Bond, the real life ornithologist based in Cuba.
Having written all this let me also say that my tastes are a bit eclectic so see these movie at your own risk.
